A jury in San Luis Obispo County on Wednesday found Armando Yepez guilty of homicide in the drive-by shooting that killed Gabriel Salgado, 17, in Oceano in November 2011.

Another teenager was injured in the shooting. Yepez was arrested during a traffic stop on Highway 101 in Nipomo back in May.

Salgado was a senior at Lopez High School in Arroyo Grande.

Deputies arrest suspect in Oceano homicide

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department says deputies have arrested a man in connection with the drive-by shooting that killed at 17-year-old Oceano teen.

Gabriel Salgado died after he was shot in the head on 21st Street in Oceano back in November. On Thursday, deputies arrested Armando Yepez, 21, of Santa Maria for his involvement in the shooting. Deputies say they served several search warrants in southern San Luis Obispo County Thursday afternoon before ultimately arresting Yepez. He is being charged with homicide, commission of a crime for the benefit of a criminal street gang, and participation in a criminal street gang. Yepez is being held on $1,000,000 bail in San Luis Obispo County Jail.

Deputies say the investigation is ongoing. Yepez is the first known arrest in this case.

Reward increased in deadly Oceano shooting

According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, Crime Stoppers has upped the reward for the arrest and conviction of a suspect in last month's deadly drive-by shooting in Oceano. The reward is now $5,000, up from $1,000.

On November 17, Gabriel Salgado, 17, was hit in the head by gunfire on 21st Street. He died the next morning. A 14-year-old boy was hit in the leg. Sheriff's investigators have said they believe the suspects are involved in gang activity.

Detectives search for leads in murder of 17 year-old Oceano boy

San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department is hoping more leads from the community will help them track down the killer of a 17 year-old Oceano boy.
The boy, who was hit in the head by gunfire, has been identified as Gabriel Salgado.
He died Friday morning at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria.
A 14-year old boy hit in the leg was treated at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, but is expected to be okay.
Sheriff's detectives canvassed the neighborhood in the 1700 block of 21st Street well into the Friday morning, trying to track down leads.
At a press conference Friday afternoon, Undersheriff Martin Basti said they have very limited descriptions of the suspects and the vehicle, but initial information in their investigation has led them to believe the suspects have possible gang ties. Though, they stress, they have not confirmed that.
Undersheriff Basti also said they have no information that the victims had gang relations.
Neighbors in the Oceano neighborhood say they heard multiple shots, followed by screeching tires.
Investigators believe the suspects shot the victims from the passenger side window, then sped away... heading south on 21st Street.
Roger Ivey lives next door to Gabe Salgado. He said he knew Gabe and the 14 year-old victim, and believes they were probably in the wrong place and the wrong time.
"They're just kids hanging out, dressed in flannels, they're just good kids," said Ivey.
Cody Reed, a friend of Gabe's, said he had a good head on his shoulders, and was always having a good time.
He said Gabe didn't deserve to die, and was in no way affiliated with a gang.
"I don't see how you can do this to an innocent kid. Especially just shoot him down in cold blood. He didn't do anything wrong," said Reed.
Gabe was a senior at Lopez High School in Arroyo Grande, and Principal Christine Granados said, he was on schedule to graduate.
" He was an all around great guy. He took a lot of classes and was doing a great job in all he did. He was truly well loved by the community and the school," said Granados.
Sheriff's detectives will continue to track down leads in their investigation, but are asking witnesses to come forward. They said you can call the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Department anonymously.

Thursday homicide is first in Oceano since 2005

The shooting death of a 17-year-old boy Thursday night is the first homicide in Oceano since 2005.

Maximino Zamora, 30, was stabbed on October 17, 2005 at a bar called Carambola Amigo in the 1900 block of Warner Street. Zamora's body was dumped on Barka Street in Grover Beach.

Ambrosia Diaz Najera was initially charged with murder for the crime, but was convicted of manslaughter.

17-year-old victim in Oceano drive-by shooting dies

According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department, a 17-year-old boy who was shot in the head during a drive-by shooting in Oceano Thursday night died at Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria Friday morning. He has been identified as Gabriel Salgado, 17, of Oceano.

The shooting happened in the 1700 block of 21st Street. It prompted a major response from law enforcement that included more than 30 personnel from the sheriff's department alone. Investigators say multiple shots were fired from a vehicle at people in the street. A 14-year-old boy was also shot in the leg.

The Lucia Mar School District is holding a news conference at 2:45 p.m. in regards to the shooting. KSBY News will bring you information from the news conference as soon as it's available.

Sheriff's Department: 15 and 17-year-old males injured in drive-by shooting in Oceano

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department hopes to release more information Friday about what led up to a drive-by shooting Thursday night in Oceano.

A department spokesperson says investigators spent all night canvassing the 1700 block of 21st Street in Oceano for more information after two teens, one 15 and one 17, were shot around 6:30p.m. Thursday.

One of the victims has serious injuries and was transferred to Marian Medical Center. The other victim's condition is unknown at this time. He is recovering at Arroyo Grande Community Hospital.

At this point, there are no suspects in custody.

One of the two male victims shot in a drive-by shooting Thursday night in Oceano was transferred to Marian Medical Center.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department said its detectives spent the night canvassing the Oceano neighborhood for more information.

Two juvenile males were shot around 6:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of 21st Street. One of the victims has serious injuries, while the other victim's condition is unknown. At this point there are no suspects in custody.

Both of the victims were originally taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, but the one with serious injuries will be taken to Marian Medical Center.

Two male victims were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds Thursday night after a drive-by shooting in Oceano.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department said it happened around 6:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of 21st Street. Multiple shots were fired during the shooting.

Many witnesses and KSBY viewers are reporting that the victims are in their teens, but the Sheriff's Department has not confirmed that information. It is also unclear how severe the victims' injuries are.

Possible shooting with two victims in Oceano

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department said it has a report of a shooting with two victims in the 1700 block of 21st Street in Oceano.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. KSBY Viewers report a large fight developing in the street.

Additional units from other jurisdictions are responding to contain the scene.
