Edwards not guilty on 1 count, mistrial on other 6

05/31/2012 01:28 PM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Former presidential candidate John Edwards was found not guilty on one of six campaign fraud charges Thursday, and the jury could not reach a verdict on the other counts, leading the judge to declare a mistrial on them.

Edwards was accused of masterminding a plan to use money from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress during his run for the White House in 2008.

John Edwards' defense seeks mistrial on most counts; judge weighs options with jury deadlocked

05/31/2012 11:58 AM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - The jury in the John Edwards campaign corruption trial has reached a verdict on one of six counts, but is apparently deadlocked on the others.

The judge told the jury Thursday that she understood that the panel had reached a verdict on all counts, and the jury foreman said no.

Prosecutors argued that the jury should keep deliberating and the defense asked for the verdict on the one count and a mistrial on the others.

The judge is taking a five minute break to weigh her options.

Jurors reach verdict in John Edwards' campaign finance fraud case

05/31/2012 11:40 AM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Jurors have reached a verdict in John Edwards' campaign corruption trial.

The verdict will be read Thursday. The jurors have been deliberating for about nine days.

Edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use money from wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008. Defense attorneys say Edwards did not knowingly break campaign finance laws. They also say the payments to hide his mistress Rielle Hunter were gifts, not campaign contributions.

Edwards is charged with six criminal counts. They include conspiracy to violate the Federal Election Campaign Act, accepting contributions that exceeded limits and causing his campaign to file a false financial disclosure report.

He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of all charges.

Jury at John Edwards trial asks for exhibits

05/21/2012 01:06 PM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - The jury deciding the fate of John Edwards in North Carolina has asked to see more evidence exhibits.

The former presidential candidate faces 30 years in prison after pleading not guilty to six campaign finance corruption charges. The jury began considering its decision Friday, after nearly four weeks of testimony. Deliberations continued Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, the jurors asked to see eight evidence exhibits.

Prosecutors have accused the Democrat of masterminding a scheme to use nearly $1 million in secret payments from two donors to help hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

Defense attorneys argued Edwards had little direct knowledge of the cover up, which they say was directed by his campaign finance chairman and a trusted aide who falsely claimed paternity of his boss' baby.

Prosecution rests in John Edwards trial

05/10/2012 02:48 PM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Prosecutors have rested their case against John Edwards after calling to the witness stand many of his closest friends and advisers.

The 14 days of testimony was often dramatic. Edwards' once-close confidant Andrew Young talked about how he and his wife used money from wealthy donors to hide Edwards' pregnant mistress. Young also testified about the decision to claim paternity of Edwards' child.

Edwards is accused of masterminding a plan to use secret payments from two wealthy donors to hide Rielle Hunter during his run for the White House in 2008.

Edwards' attorneys say he didn't know about the money. They got Young to acknowledge much of the money went to build his dream home.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

UPDATE: Speechwriter says Edwards knew about cover up

05/08/2012 03:08 PM by Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - A former speechwriter for John Edwards has testified that the onetime presidential candidate acknowledged knowing that a wealthy donor was secretly supporting his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

Wendy Button testified Tuesday at Edwards' corruption trial that she helped him in 2009 to draft a public statement admitting he had repeatedly lied about fathering a daughter with his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Button said Edwards also discussed with her that he knew his campaign finance chairman had been financially supporting Hunter and the baby. That admission was absent from the statement Edwards eventually released admitting paternity.

Edwards has publically denied knowing about nearly $1 million in secret payments provided by two wealthy donors and used to cover up his affair. He has pleaded not guilty to campaign finance violations related to the money.

Ex-John Edwards aide had suspicions of mistress

05/03/2012 08:53 AM by Associated Press, MN

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Another former close aide to John Edwards has testified about bungled efforts to keep the former presidential candidate's affair a secret.

John Davis testified Thursday that months after the mistress quit working for Edwards, Davis ran into her by chance in the candidate's Detroit hotel. The next day, Edwards denied to Davis that he was having an affair with the woman, Rielle Hunter.

But months later, he overheard a phone conversation in which Edwards asked Hunter if her pregnancy were showing. She would later have Edwards' child.

Davis is one of several former aides who have testified about their suspicion or knowledge of the affair at Edwards' campaign finance corruption trial. At issue is donor money that was used in an attempt to keep the affair out of public view.

Edwards' mistress, daughter and staff may testify

04/13/2012 09:29 AM by Associated Press, MN

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The witness list for the John Edwards criminal trial includes dozens of names close to the former presidential candidate. Among them are his eldest daughter, staffers from his 2008 campaign and Rielle Hunter, the woman at the heart of the sex scandal that destroyed his political career.

The proposed lists of witnesses for the defense and prosecution were released late Thursday, following the start of jury selection for Edwards' federal trial in Greensboro, N.C.

The Democrat faces six counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments from two campaign donors used to help hide the married candidate's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House.

As expected, former campaign aide Andrew Young is listed as a prosecution witness. Young handled the money for Hunter's care and falsely claimed paternity of Edwards' child.

Jury selection begins for Edwards trial

04/12/2012 09:13 AM by Associated Press, MN

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Jury selection is under way in North Carolina for the criminal trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards. He sat at the defense table as more than 100 potential jurors filed into a courtroom in Greensboro.

Edwards faces six criminal counts related to nearly $1 million in secret payments made by two campaign donors -- money that was used to hide his pregnant mistress as the married Democrat sought the White House in 2008.

The judge told prospective jurors that the case isn't about whether Edwards "was a good husband or politician." She said, "It's about whether he violated campaign finance laws."

She also advised them to put out of their minds any media coverage they had seen -- and not to tell anyone, even their families, that they had been called for the Edwards case.

Edwards has denied knowing about the money. Prosecutors will try to prove that he sought the payments and directed them to cover up his affair and to keep alive his presidential hopes.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and as much as $1.5 million in fines.

Edwards Campaign Ordered to Repay Millions In Public Matching Funds

03/16/2012 09:30 AM by Associated Press (DS)

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Federal Election Commission is upholding a ruling that requires the campaign of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards to repay the U.S. Treasury more than $2.1 million in public matching funds.

According to documents unsealed Friday, the commission has denied the campaign's request to reconsider its original repayment order. The FEC says the campaign now has less than a month to pay back the money.

Lawyers working for Edwards in the case did not have an immediate response Friday morning. Edwards' lawyers had requested a review of the original order, which was issued last July.

The FEC case is separate from a pending criminal trial in which Edwards has pleaded not guilty to charges of violating campaign finance law in a bid to cover up an extramarital affair.

John Edwards asks to delay trial, citing illness

12/22/2011 01:31 PM by KO, The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Former presidential candidate John Edwards is seeking to delay his criminal trial over campaign finances. He says he has been diagnosed with a medical condition that will make it difficult for him to attend.
Edwards' trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 30.
In a motion filed Thursday, Edwards' defense team asked a judge to delay the start of the trial at least two months.
His illness was not publicly disclosed. Edwards' lawyers filed sealed records with the court.
Federal prosecutors filed a separate motion opposing the delay. The start date has already been put back once after Edwards said he needed more time to prepare his defense and attend his daughter's wedding.
Edwards is charged with six counts related to campaign finance violations. He appeared healthy at a court hearing last week.
