The U.S. Forest Service says the Lookout Fire that burned 44 acres in Santa Barbara County last week was caused by a downed power line.

The fire was declared contained as of 5 p.m. on October 18.

The Lookout Fire in Santa Barbara County was contained as of 5 p.m. Thursday, according to Rich Phelps of the U.S. Forest Service.

Phelps says a staff of about 175 fire personnel will remain on scene Friday patrolling the fire lines and mopping up any hot spots.

The fire will not be staffed Thursday night due to favorable weather conditions.


Containment of Lookout Fire expected Friday

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department expects to have the Lookout Fire contained by 6 p.m. Friday.

The 44-acre fire broke out Wednesday morning in the Painted Cave area off Highway 154.

A fire department spokesperson says a total of 190 people are still working to surround the flames.

Fire fighters say "Lookout Fire" now 75% contained, clean up efforts continue Thursday

Thursday morning fire fighters are working to mop up and fully contain the so-called "Lookout Fire" that's burning in the Painted Cave area of Santa Barbara County.

The U.S. Forest Service says it is now 75% percent contained after burning 44 acres.

The fire broke out just before 8 a.m. yesterday morning near Highway 154.

About 40 homes were evacuated, but residents have since been given the go-ahead to return home.

Bill White, who works with the U.S. Forest Service tells us, "In the morning crews will still be remaining, making sure that containment is still holding. They'll be mopping up and patrolling to make sure the line to make sure that theres no hot spots in and around the perimeter of the fire."

Officials say no structures or homes have been damaged.

One firefighter hurt his leg.


Evacuation order lifted for those affected by Lookout Fire

The evacuation order has been lifted for those affected by the Lookout fire.

Red Cross will now be closing the evacuation point located at the Wake Center at 300 North Turnpike.

The fire broke out around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Painted Cave Area, just north of Santa Barbara.

Fire crews are still at the scene and will be camped out overnight.

The fire is 45% contained.


Residents evacuated due to Lookout Fire can return home at 5 p.m.

People who were ordered to evacuate their homes due to the Lookout Fire Wednesday will be allowed to return home at 5 p.m., the Santa Barbara County Fire Department announced. Anyone who does not live in that area is asked to stay out.

The fire department expects to keep about 150 fire personnel on scene of the fire overnight.


Sheriff's deputies to patrol evacuation zones in Lookout Fire

The Painted Cave area is still under a mandatory evacuation order due to the Lookout Fire. The Trout Club and Hidden Valley Communities are under an evacuation warning.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies say they will aggressively patrol the evacuation areas. Those found to be in the evacuation areas face citation or arrest.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the Lookout Fire burning in the Painted Cave area is now 45 percent contained. There are 300 fire personnel on scene.

40 structures evacuated, another 60 threatened in Lookout Fire

The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management released an advisory Wednesday stating 40 structures have been evacuated and another 60 structures are at risk because of the Lookout Fire.

They're currently reporting the fire is 10% contained, and around 25 acres have burned.

1 firefighter injured in Lookout Fire, winds remain top concern

The Santa Barbara County Fire department says expected afternoon winds are the biggest concern as firefighters battle the 15-acre Lookout Fire between Highway 154 and Painted Cave Road. The fire is burning along the top of a slope in a rocky area, where there is a lack of fuel due to defensible space cleared by homeowners.

So far, no structures have been lost or damaged.

Southern California Edison was on scene dealing with some downed power lines in the area, however the Santa Barbara County Fire Department says the cause of the fire is not related to the power lines at this point.

One firefighter received a minor leg injury while fighting the fire.

Crews from Santa Barbara County Fire, Santa Barbara City Fire, Montecito Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, CAL FIRE, the CHP, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department, and the Vandenberg Fire Department are working together on this fire.

They're using a total of 16 engines, four water tenders, four helicopters, and two water tankers.

Evacuation location set up for large animals as the Lookout Fire burns

Santa Barbara County Animal Service is on standby status as fire fighter's battle the Lookout Fire in the Painted Cave area.

Right now, there is one evacuation location at the Earl Warren Show Grounds on the 3400 block of Calle Real in Santa Barbara. According to a grounds official, they are accepting large animals at this time; this includes any animal that cannot fit in a car. At this time the grounds can hold just over 500 animals.

There is also a hotline set up for people with animals who have been evacuated at 681-4223 for any further direction.


American Red Cross opens evacuation point for Lookout Fire

The American Red Cross is opening an evacuation point for residents evacuated by the Lookout Fire. The location is 300 North Turnpike in Goleta. The evacuation point has snacks and beverages as well as continuous updates on the fire's status.

The Red Cross has released the following safety tips for people living in areas of the wildfire: be ready to leave at a moment's notice, listen to local radio and television stations for updated emergency information, always back your car into the garage or park it in an open space facing the direction of escape, confine pets to one room so that you can find them if you need to evacuate quickly, and arrange for temporary housing at a friend or relative's home outside the threatened area.

Officials are urging everyone who is told to evacuate to do so immediately.

According to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Services, more than 100 homes remain under a mandatory evacuation order as fire crews battle the so-called Lookout Fire in the Painted Cave area.

Kinevan Road is the western boundary of the evacuation zone. Painted Cave Road is at the eastern boundary. The evacuation zone stretches north to East Camino Cielo.


Lookout Fire burning in area of deadly 1990 wildfire

The Lookout Fire is burning in the same area where the deadly Painted Cave Fire destroyed more than 400 homes back in 1990.

It broke out on a hot, dry and windy day, just like the weather has been on the Central Coast lately.

In just three hours, the fire would burn 5,000 acres.

A 37-year-old woman was killed.

It turned out a known arsonist set the fire, but no criminal charges were ever filed.

More than $250,000,000 in property was destroyed in the Painted Cave Fire.


Air tankers arrive at Lookout Fire

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, two air tankers are now on scene helping to fight a 15-acre brush fire in the Painted Cave area off Highway 154. The air tankers arrived at 9:30 a.m. and are currently making drops.

Firefighters are up against warm weather and moderate humidity.

So far, no homes or structures have been lost, but homes continue to be threatened. The painted cave area, which includes about 100 homes, is under a mandatory evacuation order.

Highway 154 is open in both directions but county roads, including Painted Cave Road, are closed.
