    Salinas soldier killed in Afghanistan

    The Department of Defense says a soldier from Salinas was killed in Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by enemy forces with an improvised explosive device.

    Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, died Saturday. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, at Joint Base Lewuis-McChord in Washington.

  • SANTA YNEZ VALLEY

    Pilot rescued after landing in Santa Ynez Valley

    The Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to an aircraft down near the Santa Ynez Valley Airport.

    Around 8:00 a.m. Sunday a pilot needed help landing his small aircraft because of heavy cloud cover.

    He thought he was going to be able to glide the aircraft to the runway.

    Firefighters say they located the aircraft one mile southwest of the airport.

    When they found him, he was standing outside of the aircraft.

    There were no injuries.

    22 DUI arrests in Santa Barbara County

    The Memorial Day weekend DUI enforcement effort has already resulted in 22 DUI arrests.

    It's all part of the "Avoid the 12" campaign in Santa Barbara County.

    From Friday through midnight Saturday, Santa Barbara officers arrested 22 people for driving under the influence.

    CHP throughout the state are also patrolling freeways and county roads this holiday weekend.

    Mustangs finish season with win, hope for playoffs

    It was a perfect final day of the regular season for the Cal Poly baseball team.  The Mustangs won at UC-Riverside, 6-0 and CS-Fullerton beat Long Beach State, 5-1.  The win is the Mustangs seventh in a row and 14th in their last 17 games.  Cal Poly finishes the regular season (More)
