The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a 1-0 overtime loss at Cal State Bakersfield.
The Gauchos, who are ranked as high as #4 in the preseason polls, outshot the Roadrunners 16-11 in the game but could not find the back of the net.
The Roadrunners' Gyasi Zardes scored off a deflection of a free kick in the 97th minute for the golden goal.
The Gauchos had two great opportunities late in the second half. In the 81st minute,
preseason All-American Danny Barrera's headed hit the post. A couple minutes later, Luis Silva led an opportunity that ended with Eric Shannon making a great save on Christian Ramirez's shot. He made eight saves in the game. UCSB goalie Sam Hayden made five saves, one shy of his career high.
The overtime loss was the first time in at least 11 years that UCSB lost its season opener.
The Gauchos beat CSUB 3-1 to open last season.
The Gauchos return to action Saturday at New Mexico. It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2007.
The Gauchos return eight starters from last year's squad that went 17-5-2 and made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
