LOS ANGELES (AP) - About 1,000 people have attended a memorial for the Coast Guard petty officer who died after a boat collision while investigating suspected smuggling off the California coast.

Saturday's ceremony honoring Senior Chief Petty Officer Terrell Horne included a 21-gun salute, military aircraft flyovers and speeches.

Horne died last Sunday after a small boat he was on was struck by a panga-style vessel running without lights. Authorities said Horne and another crewman were thrown into the ocean and a propeller struck him in the head.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano called what happened a "tragic attack" that reminds us of the dangers the men and women of the Coast Guard face.

Two Mexican nationals have been arrested and charged with killing Horne.
