PICO RIVERA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say one man is dead and a woman is being held hostage after a parolee exchanged gunfire with Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Nicole Nishida says the 24-year-old armed man is holed up with the woman hours later Friday night at a home in Pico Rivera, and negotiators are trying to get him to surrender.
Nishida says at about 5:30 p.m. a sheriff's team was looking for the man, and when they spotted him he fled and broke into the house of people he doesn't know.
At some point he exchanged fire with deputies, none of whom were injured.
Nishida says a man from the house who deputies were trying to rescue was killed. It wasn't immediately clear how he died.
The suspect may have been injured.
