Sheriff's deputies say twelve people are safe after the boat they were on sank in Lake Nacimiento Sunday afternoon.
Investigators say the boat was over capacity when it began sinking in the Las Tables area of Lake Nacimiento just before 1:30p.m. Sunday. They say the boat was traveling at a speed of five miles per hour when it was struck by a wave current and began flooding. The weight of the twelve people on board helped the vessel to begin sinking nose first in the seven feet of water.
Deputies say the 12 people on board the boat were able to get back to a main dock safely.
Sheriff's Marine Unit deputies remind boaters to know the load limitations of their vessel before heading out on any waterway. They say overloaded vessels swamped by wave action is the primary cause of boats sinking at Lake Nacimiento.
The sinking is under investigation by Monterey County Park Rangers.
