Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak has confirmed that the officers died after the shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that the first of two shootings took place as police were investigating a sexual assault. A suspect fired, hitting the two officers.

The newspaper says a third person was shot while police were in pursuit of the shooter. Authorities say that person also died.

Police say they are still search for at least one other suspect.
