A 26-year-old Shandon man is dead and an investigation is underway, after a three-vehicle collision on Highway 46 near Shandon.
It happened around 6 p.m. Friday on the eastbound side of the highway, just east of McMillan Canyon Road.
CHP officers say a small sedan had come to a stop in the turn lane, and the driver was waiting to turn left into his driveway.
Officers say that car was then rear-ended by a larger sedan. The impact pushed the car into the westbound lanes, where it was hit by a truck towing a travel trailer.
Officers say drivers should always stay alert, especially on busy travel days. "Motorists should use a high visual horizon and look for obstacles due to traffic. Don't look at the bumper in front of you as you're traveling down the roadway. Anticipate hazards ahead," said Officer Steve Egan of the California Highway Patrol. The people in the other two vehicles were taken to the hospital with minor and moderate injuries. The name of the victim has not been released.
