APTOS, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are holding three suspects after a Santa Cruz County man investigators say was selected as a random target was shot and killed as he walked along an overpass over Highway 1.
KSBW-TV reports (http://bit.ly/L6f4F3 ) that 21-year-old Fernando Martin Mendoza-Avila was walking on the overpass in Aptos around 6 p.m. Wednesday when one of three men in a passing car opened fire.
Mendoza-Avila died at the scene.
Sheriff's Lt. Fred Plageman told the station that there were a number of witnesses to the shooting, leading them to the owner of the car, 21-year-old Alfredo Alanis Garcia. He was arrested Thursday.
Two other men, 21-year-old Christopher Herrera and 20-year-old Rafael Barron, were arrested Friday.
All three men are being held on suspicion of murder.
Detectives say the three suspects are gang members. Initially it was believed the shooting was gang-related, but detectives said Friday that Mendoza-Avila was chosen at random.
