SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Three leaders of a Northern California gang have been sentenced to federal prison as part of an ongoing crackdown on its drug trafficking activities.
Federal prosecutors in Sacramento said Tuesday that all three were once regiment commanders of Nuestra Familia in San Francisco and Merced County. The gang is based in prisons but controls the actions of street-level Norteno gang members.
The three are Marco "Silky" Gomez Jr. and Benjamin "Reaper" Castro of San Francisco, and Edward Fuentes of Merced.
Gomez, who is 33, and Castro, age 35, were each sentenced Monday to 25-year prison terms on charges of trafficking methamphetamine. Fuentes, who is 32, received a 20-year prison sentence.
Twenty-six gang members have been convicted since the crackdown began in 2007.
