The San Francisco 49ers have signed the top kicker on the free agent. Former Cleveland Brown Phil Dawson tweeted Tuesday that he's headed for San Francisco.
"I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers!" Dawson wrote on Twitter.
The 49ers released David Akers earlier this month.
In 2012, Dawson converted 29 of his 31 field goal attempts for a 93.5 percent conversion rate that ranked second in the NFL. Akers was second to last at 69 percent.
Last year, Dawson earned his first Pro Bowl spot after he was a perfect 13 for 13 on kicks over 40 yards. Akers was 9 for 19 on kicks over 40 yards. Dawson has made 14 of his last 15 tries from 50 yards or longer over the last two seasons.
Dawson has played all 14 years of his NFL career with Cleveland and only been to the postseason once. Dawson is 38 years old and 45 days younger than Akers.
