7 LA sheriff's deputies arrested in jail probe

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal indictment names seven Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice as part of an FBI investigation into inmate abuse and corruption at the nation's largest jail system.

The grand jury indictment filed Nov. 20 charges two lieutenants, one of whom oversaw the department's safe jails program, two sergeants and three deputies.

They're accused of trying to thwart the FBI's contact with an inmate helping federal agents in their corruption and civil rights probe. Court documents show one investigation involved trying to see if a deputy would accept a bribe to provide the inmate with a cell phone.

A law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak publicly and insisted on anonymity says at least seven current and former deputies have been arrested.
