A ten-run second inning propelled the Cuesta College baseball team to a 13-0 win over Porterville on Friday afternoon.
Three Cougar pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout to follow up a two-hit shutout on Wednesday. The 7th ranked Cougars improved to 2-0 on their homestand and 2-3 overall.
Mission Prep graduate Alex Detz started the scoring for Cuesta with a one-out single to right field to score Josh Miller from second base in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cougars started the second inning with a lead-off single from Jack Colick, who promptly stole second base. After Miller was hit by a pitch, San Luis Obispo High graduate Michael Nierporte roped a basehit to right center field to score Colick to make it 2-0. Detz followed with a two-run triple down the right field line to bring Miller and Nieporte around the bases. The Cougars promptly drew multiple walks with the bases loaded on top of a wild pitch that allowed another one to score. In all, the Cougars sent 13 men to the plate and scored 10 runs on just 3 hits in the bottom of the second inning. They led 11-0 after two innings and cruised from there to their second-straight win via a shutout.
SLO High graduate David Murillo started on the mound for the Cougars to earn his first win of the season. He allowed one hit in 7 1/3 innings, while walking 3 and striking out 8 Pirates. Jake Freeman threw 2/3 of an inning of relief, while Steven Nagy pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Cougars continue their homestand on Saturday with a doubleheader against Canada College. The games are set to begin at 10am and 1 pm.
