Despite a game-high 26 points from senior guard Andy Rowley, the Royals and lost their challenge game 72-57 to highly-touted Bishop Montgomery on Wednesday to open Mission's 14th annual Christmas Classic.
The Royals dropped to 5-2 on the season, while Bishop improved to 6-0.
Mission trailed 11-2 early in the game and trailed 20-4 after the first quarter. The Royals closed the gap and eventually closed to within ten points early in the fourth quarter, but they never recovered.
Bishop Montgomery, the 8th ranked team in California this week by Cal-Hi Sports, features three Division I recruits. Lamond Murray, Jr., the son of former NBA star Lamond Murray, led the Knights with 24 points. He has committed to Pepperdine. They also feature 6-10 center Stephon Jovanovic, a Hawaii commit, and guard Stephen Thompson, Jr.., who's being recruited by Arizona, Syracuse, UNLV and a few other D-I schools.
Mission looks to bounce back Thursday at 7pm against Marin Catholic in the Elite Division Bracket. Bishop Montgomery battles Brighton, one of the top teams in Utah, at 1pm Thursday in the National Division Bracket. Brighton beat up on San Luis Obispo 64-19.
