Freshman pitcher Justin Calomeni improved to 5-0 as the Cal Poly baseball team finished off a home sweep of Wagner with a 7-2 win. The victory was the second for Calomeni this week and improves the 8th ranked Mustangs to 17-3. Cal Poly has won seven straight games including six in the last six days at home.
Senior third baseman Jimmy Allen knocked in four runs with three hits to lead an 11 hit attack. Cal Poly never trailed, but held a slim 3-2 lead before scoring once in the sixth inning and three more times in the eighth.
Wagner, located on Staten Island in New York City, fell to 2-11.
Calomeni allowed two runs and four hits in 5 1/3 innings for the win, five days after opening the Northern Illinois series with a strong performance as well. Against Wagner, Calomeni walked four and struck out five. Danny Zandona, Jearl Jesson, Nick Suniga and Slater Lee combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Senior first baseman Tim Wise was 3-for-5 Sunday with two singles and a triple while senior catcher Chris Hoo and junior right fielder Nick Torres each had a pair of hits.
Cal Poly hit .314 in the Wagner series with 11 doubles and three triples. The Mustang pitching staff allowed 1.33 earned runs per game and held Wagner to a .189 team batting average.
The Mustangs take a break for Winter Quarter finals, they start a four game home series against Cal on Friday. The Bears are 10-8 after being swept at home by UCLA over the weekend.
