A Great Knight: St. Joseph wins OT thriller, advances to first semifinal since 2004

Depsite blowing a 14 point fourth quarter lead, the St. Joseph basketball team dug deep and pulled out a thrilling 62-59 overtime win over Campbell Hall to score revenge and a CIF semifinal berth on Tuesday night.

The Knights improved to 22-7 overall after knocking off Campbell Hall, the same team that eliminated St. Joseph in the quarterfinals in 2008 and 2012.

"There was plenty of motivation for our kids to come out and we had a great crowd, a great student body. So it was just a great night," said St. Joseph head coach Tom Mott.

Case Bruton led the Knights with a game-best 26 points, including 18 in the first half. Keith Datu added 10 points and 14 rebounds for a double-double. Curry Parham tallied 13 points and Isaac Murillo scored 6 points to go with 10 assists.

The Knights led 35-27 at the half and behind 7-straight points from Parham led 53-39 with 7 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Vikings stormed all the way back behind star Aaron Holiday. The younger brother of NBA star Jrue Holiday helped Campbell Hall come all the way back to tie it in the final minute of regulation after holding the Knights to 2 points in the final seven minutes of regulation. Kahlil Simplis hit a three pointer from the top of the arc with less than 40 seconds to play to tie it at 55-55. Parham missed a potential game-winning shot sending the game to overtime.

The Knight outscored the Vikings 7-4 in the extra period to claim their first semifinal berth since 2004. The Knights led 60-56 when Simplis hit another 3 to make it a one point game with 26 seconds left in overtime. Aaron Olsen was fouled on the in-bounds play and calmly knocked down both free throws for St. Joseph.

"It's crazy. It was something we've been practicing for all year. I mean we've been wanting to get this team back since the beginning of the season. We lost to them in the quarterfinals at their place so it was just great coming back here and be able to beat them," said Parham, who just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.

Holiday finished with 25 points to lead Campbell Hall, which ended the year 16-12.

The Knights, the #3 seed in Division 4A, host #2 Brentwood on Friday in the semifinals. Brentwood beat St. Margaret's 78-57 in the quarterfinals and is 26-3 on the season. They beat Campbell Hall 88-69 and 83-78 during the regular season.
