Cal Poly football entered its second week of practice on Monday a little nicked up, but the team continues to make progress.
The Mustangs completed their sixth day of practice on Monday. So far, head coach Tim Walsh says the injury list includes slotback Cole Stanford, who injured two ribs last week. Walsh expects the 6-2, 225 pound junior to be ready for the season opener after missing 10-14 days of practice. Offensive linemen Kyle Zotnneck (sprained ankle), Karl Winkelman (eye problem) and sophomore defensive back Kevin Britt (back problems), a Nipomo High graduate, are also among the hobbled Mustangs.
All things considered, coach Walsh says his young squad is coming together on both sides of the ball.
"I think we're playing at a really good tempo and I think that Andre Broadous has such great command of what we're doing this year I really think it could be something special for us on the offensive side of the ball," said Walsh. "Defensively, I think we've come along. Now we're young at certain positions. But guys who are the leaders Kenny Jackson, Sullivan Grosz and Nico Molino those guys are doing a good job leading the troops."
"There's a lot, a lot of juniors on the defense. I think there's only two seniors and we're all close-knit together and we're all working together doing everything good. This year is going to be great," added junior defensive lineman Nick Leyden. The Pioneer Valley High graduate is a potential starter for the Mustangs as a defensive end.
True freshman Elias Stokes, a Paso Robles High graduate, has been impressive at slotback so far in camp. Hear from Stokes on Tuesday night on KSBY News.
Cal Poly opens the season September 1 at home against the University of San Diego.
