The Auto Club of Southern California is doing its part to keep drunk drivers off the road. AAA will be offering its annual Tipsy Tow program.

A tow truck can take you and your car home for free up to seven miles. The program starts at six o'clock on new year's eve and runs through the end of new year's day.

Too many of these and you might want to call these guys. That's right. Call AAA and ask for a Tipsy Tow. The program is open to both members and non members to get you and your car home safely.

"They will dispatch it out to us through our computers and stuff at night and then pick up that car and give them a local tow within a few miles wherever they are to their home," said Brian Gomez with Santa Maria Towing, who contracts with AAA.

On a night where bars are flooded with hundreds of partygoers,

"We pretty much have a line going around the outside, said Christina Devey," a bartender at Elmer's in Orcutt.

Gomez says few use the program. He suspects more people are drinking and using a designated driver.

"Usually we only get maybe a handful of calls. . .I've never had anybody I can think of that's really abused the privilege. . .so it's not like they're saying, I live here in Santa Maria and I want to go to San Luis," Gomez said.

Local bars think it's a great idea for those who go a bit too far.

"We get a few people that have a little too much fun and one too many beers and that's not our goal. It's just to keep everybody safe," Devey said.

I wake up in the morning. I'm at home. I'm safe and my car's there too," said Adam Adams of Orcutt

So, even if you don't remember your New Year's Eve, you can at least be sure where you parked your car.

The program is restricted to a one-way trip and a one-time ride for the tipsy driver.

If you need to reach Tipsy Tow, just call 1-800-400-4-AAA.
