About half of Americans believe in medical conspiracies

Do you think the government is hiding information about cell phones causing cancer, or is preventing people from getting natural cures? Well, a new study finds about half of Americans believe at least one medical conspiracy theory.

University of Chicago researchers surveyed more than 1,300 adults about six popular medical conspiracy theories. Thirty-seven percent fully agreed that U.S. regulators are restricting access to alternative medicines, while 20% believed routine vaccinations cause autism.

The only theory that most disagreed with was that a U.S. spy agency had infected a large number of African Americans with HIV.

Experts say people may believe in conspiracy theories because they are easier to understand than complicated medical information.
