AC units on overload

Business heated up in Northern San Luis Obispo County Wednesday for air conditioning companies as temperatures hit triple digits for the second day in a row.
Air Rite, an Atascadero AC company, received 100 phone calls about units not working. The heat can make people a little stir crazy and it's even harder on those who are out working in it.
But with the heat comes business.
"Business is crazy. It's so hectic and stressful, so you have to really take care of your body because of the hot weather," said Arne Johansen, an Air Rite technician.
Today's task at hand was fixing two AC unit's that cool a 4,000 sq. foot Paso Robles home.
Extreme heat leads to system failure, and when the AC goes out people get hot and irritable. During the Summer months, Northern San Luis Obispo County is known to be hot.
"So this run compacitor is dead and that is why the machine is not working," said Johansen, as he ran tests on an AC unit.
Triple digits make the AC unit's work harder, but technicians like Arne Johansen come to the rescue. A broken unit could set you back a few hundred dollars.
"There we go, we got power," said Johansen with excitement.
A typical summer day can last 12 hours for an AC tech, so they are sure to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade.
Some tips on saving energy and staying cool: draw the blinds during the day, unplug appliances that you aren't using, use ceiling fans, keep your AC unit's temp constant between 72 and 75 degrees. Also remember to change the AC unit's filters and get it serviced annually.
