LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officials at the Los Angeles Zoo say a baby chimpanzee was killed by an adult male chimpanzee inside their exhibit as visitors watched.
Zoo spokesman Jason Jacobs said in a statement that visitors told zoo officials the 3-month-old infant chimp who had not yet been named was attacked in her habitat by the adult male on Tuesday.
Jacobs says zoo workers could not stop the attack because it is not safe for them to occupy the same space as the chimpanzees.
The baby's mother, a chimp named Gracie who gave birth on March 6, is being allowed to keep the body overnight to grieve.
Jacobs says the infant was being gradually introduced to the troop, and there had been no previous indication of aggressive behavior toward her.
