An adult spelling bee was held in Santa Maria on Saturday.
The event was a fundraiser for the Central Coast Literacy Council.
Twenty-nine teams of two adults competed in the Literacy Council's 20th annual Adult Spelling Bee Fundraiser.
The non-profit teaches northern Santa Barbara County adults to read, write, and speak in English.
Organizers say more than 35,000 adults in the Santa Maria Valley are unable to understand or communicate in English.
Beth Wonson, executive director for the Central Coast Literacy Council, says their mission is "to empower adults through English language literacy."
The Central Coast Literacy Council has ten centers around the Santa Maria Valley.
