Pre-enrollment for the Affordable Care Act begins on October 1. The San Luis Obispo County Department of Social Services says it will have extended hours for its local call center starting on Tuesday. It will operate Monday through Saturday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
In July, the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved the hiring of 24 new employees to staff the call center.
Residents are transferred to their local call center if they are determined to be eligible for Medi-Cal after first calling Covered California, the state's version of the federally-required health exchange, at 1-800-300-1506.
The SLO County Department of Social Services says more than 1.4 million Californians will be newly eligible for Medi-Cal because of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
