After years of declines, Sacramento crime rates jump

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A rise in Sacramento violent crime has ended an era of annual declines in murders, robberies, rapes and thefts.
Police records show a 5 percent increase in the city and a 12 percent hike in areas patrolled by the Sheriff's Department.
The Sacramento Bee (http://bit.ly/Y9wmUP ) says statistics from nine of the region's largest law enforcement agencies also shows significant violent crime increases of 15 percent or more in Folsom, Roseville, Rancho Cordova and West Sacramento.
The increase reverses a the long-term decline in crime in the Sacramento region and the nation.
Violent crime nationwide last year was about half the rate from two decades earlier.
The FBI is still collecting year-end crime totals.
