A gutsy effort from Sophie Whittle and a sweep in doubles from Amber Domako and Zoe Miller helped the Arroyo Grande High girl's tennis team beat visiting Capistrano Valley 11-7 in the CIF quarterfinals on Monday.
The Eagles improved to 19-1 and advanced into the semifinals for the first time in recent memory.
Playing in the unseasonably warm weather, Whittle pulled out a grueling first set 7-6 (7-3) over Capistrano's top singles player. Whittle threw up twice during the match, but pulled it out and received a huge round of applause from the crowd watching the first set. The sophomore and two-time Pac 7 singles champion won her second set 6-0 and overcame a 2-5 deficit to sweep her sets 7-5.
Lauren Hayashi posted two wins in singles play 3-6, 6-0 and 6-0, while Alex Mero won one of her three sets 0-6, 0-6 and 6-2.
Domako and Miller won their three sets 7-5, 6-4 and 6-4. Melina Rodgers and Joanne Phung won the 10th and match-clinching set 7-5 after dropping their first two sets 4-6, 2-6.
Chelsea Pudwill and Alexis Flood won their third set 6-2 after losing their first two sets 4-6, 0-6.
