Arroyo Grande High tennis star Eli Whittle advanced into the next round of the C.I.F. on Friday for the first time in his successful prep career.
The junior won all three of his matches in straight-sets at the CIF Individual Section on Friday in Carpinteria. Whittle defeated Ben Furakawa from Laguna Blanca High 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. He defeated Nick Polero of Santa Barbara High in the second round 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) to avenge an earlier loss to Polero in the season. Whittle won his third match over Julian Gordy from Viewpoint 6-4, 7-5.
Whittle will find out if he goes straight into next Friday's Round of 16 for the Southern Section singles title or if he will have to play in next Thursday's Round of 32.
The three-time PAC 7 League singles champion is ranked #6 in the Hot 100 for national junior recruits. He is 44-4 overall this season.
Arroyo Grande's Sean Hollister won his first two matches at the Sectional before falling to the 13th ranked player in Southern California 6-3, 6-1 in the third round. Hollister finished the season 34-5 overall.
The AG doubles team of Jordan Hayashi and Derek Lakowske fell in the second round to a team from Santa Barbara High 6-4, 6-1.
