After losing 55-41 in the CIF-SS Division 2A semifinals last Tuesday the Arroyo Grande basketball team thought its season was over. On Thursday the coaches made a call to the CIF State office just to make sure. They were told that indeed they would be selected for the State Tournament. "It was kind of a weird situation to be in, we kind of brought a little closure to the season and didn't have a great chance to make the state playoffs. But once we found out we were in we kind of regrouped in the last few days and we're looking forward to playing again for sure" said head coach Ryan Glanville.
Glanville text messaged his players to tell them the news. Many of them were planning to move on to spring sports like sophomore Cobe Williams who plays golf. "I was actually heading off to fifth period and then I got the text and just felt rejuvenated that you got another chance" said Williams.
The State Tournament berth extends the career of five Arroyo Grande seniors including Desean Scott. "I was definitely surprised, more excited because after the loss on Tuesday I was pretty heartbroken. But just to be able to play again with the team and get more practice in. I never thought I would miss going to practice or going on long road trips" said Scott.
The Eagles are the 13 seed out of 16 teams in the Southern California Regional. Arroyo Grande (22-9) will play at Westlake (26-5) on Wednesday at 7:30pm. The Warriors lost in the CIF-SS Division 2A championship game to Redondo Union. The same team that beat the Eagles in the semifinals. Westlake averages 78 points per game led by senior guard Grant Lozoya who scores 18 per contest. The teams starting center is 6'8" tall.
Arroyo Grande made it to the second round of the Division 3 State Tournament last year, the Eagles are in Division 2 this season.
