The Arroyo Grande High girls tennis team played its best match of the season to continue its quest for the program's first-ever CIF title. The Eagles routed Aliso Niguel 17-1 in a Division 3 semifinal match on Wednesday to advance to their first CIF final since 1983.
The Pac 7 League champion Eagles improved to 20-1 overal.
Sophie Whittle and Lauren Hayashi swept their singles sets. Whittle, a sophomore, won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, while Hayashi, a junior, cruised 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0. Alex Mero won two out of three sets 2-6, 7-5 and 6-4.
The Eagles swept all nine doubles sets. Amber Domako and Zoe Miller won their two sets 7-6 (11-9) and 6-0 before Angelica Gagliano subbed in for Domako to team with Miller for a 6-2 victory. Chelsea Pudwill and Alexis Flood won 7-5, 6-1 and 6-1. Melina Rodgers and Joanne Phung also cruised 7-5, 6-2 and 6-0.
Arroyo Grande plays Laguna Hills at 10:30 am Friday at the Claremont Club. Laguna Hills upset #1 Malibu 11-7 in the semifinals.
