Vandenberg Air Force Base officials say an airman from the 9th Space Operations Squadron was injured in a car accident Friday on Highway 1.
It happened shortly around 12:10 p.m. on the southbound side of Highway 1, about half a mile south of San Antonio Road and two miles north of the Vandenberg Air Force Base main gate.
According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the airman drove 300 feet over the side of the road.
Firefighters and 30th Space Wing emergency response teams arrived at the scene and found the car. They tried to use a rope system to rescue the airman, but it was too difficult.
They used a helicopter to send a firefighter down to the car and hoist the airman up.
The California Highway Patrol says the airman is a 21-year-old woman from Lompoc.
CHP officers say she has minor injuries. She was transported to a local hospital in a CALSTAR helicopter.
Her name hasn't been released.
