Alert neighbors help police catch suspected burglar in Atascadero

Police in Atascadero arrested 21-year-old Joseph Hyde Tuesday after they say he robbed three homes in the city within 25 minutes.

Police say at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, two residents noticed an unfamiliar truck in their neighbor's driveway in the 5600 block of Lobos Ave. Knowing their neighbor was out of town, the residents confronted the driver, who said he was looking for someone and then took off. The neighbors called police. Officers determined the suspect had broken into the home through a back window.

As police searched for the truck, they got two more calls about similar burglaries in the area, on Fresno and San Jacinto Avenues.

Police say an alert officer spotted the truck in a nearby driveway. When the officer returned a few minutes later, the truck was gone. Officers say a resident at that home identified the suspect as Hyde. He was arrested at his home in Santa Margarita. Investigators believe Hyde had been looking for prescription drugs in the homes.

Hyde is being held in the San Luis Obispo County Jail on $50,000 bond.
