It would be huge if the talk is true. A direct flight to one of the most popular tourist destinations around, right in our own backyard.
How does hopping on a plane from Santa Maria to Hawaii sound? The whispers have been going around town in Santa Maria for awhile now, and Allegiant Air, which already flies out of Santa Maria to Las Vegas, says it's going to make a big announcement on Tuesday to a vacation destination.
You're going to have to wait until Tuesday for the official word, but from talking to most people, this is a done deal.
Some city officials tell us they have received invitations to the celebration on Tuesday and the invitation mentions non-stop service to Hawaii. Other sources in the hospitality industry say they understand there will be two flights a week to the Aloha State that could start as early as June.
If it's all true, this would be the first non-stop flight to Hawaii on the Central Coast.
In April, Allegiant announced flights to Hawaii from Las Vegas and Fresno. Those flights start at $350 roundtrip to Honolulu and will begin at the end of June.
They are Boeing 757 aircraft, larger than any airliners that currently fly out of Santa Maria, so it's likely the new runway extension helped make the new destination possible.
