You might have to pay an extra $35 when you fly Allegiant Air.
Starting Wednesday, passengers who chose to bring carry-on bags that need to go in overheard bins, will have to pay up to $35. Passengers will still be allowed to bring one personal item with them, like a purse, laptop or briefcase, for free; and it needs to fit under the seat. If they decide to bring something bigger, that will cost them.
Allegiant Air has been flying out of the Santa Maria Airport since early 2006, with four flights a week to Las Vegas.
But if you bought your ticket before Wednesday, you are good to go.
For Nick Silver, flying Allegiant would be pretty pricey for him and his family. They're flying to Cleveland, Ohio Wednesday on another airline, with their four carry-ons.
"That's a lot of money for a big family, or even just an average family of four," said Silver of Arroyo Grande.
On whether or not he would ever pay $35 for a carry-on, he said he would have to consider it. "We don't have that kind of money to be spending. Luckily, we don't travel that often but still, even one time, that's a lot for the trip," added Silver.
For Andrea Ovendale, Allegiant is now longer an option. "I think it stinks. I wouldn't want to pay $35 for a carry-on," said Ovendale of Santa Maria.
Luckily, for Matt Leipzig, he bought his ticket a couple of weeks before his trip to Vegas next week; so this $35 charge won't apply to him. "If you do the math, yeah, it's still $140 round trip to Las Vegas. That's not bad," said Leipzig of Shell Beach.
He hopes the new fees will speed up the boarding time, and other people we spoke to today agree. With people who purposely don't check their luggage, saying it's carry-on, which takes up bin space. It often means no room for the people who are the last to board the plane. This also adds time for boarding, and unloading the plane.
"Sometimes I do want my carry-on luggage with me because I like bringing a snack, or I bring a pillow. So if it's charging, that would really stink," added Ovendale.
But for Nick and his family, they won't have to pay for their four carry-ons; unless the next flight is on Allegiant.
To check your bags on Allegiant, fees will depend on the size and where you're flying. Prices range from $14.99 to $34.99 per bag.
