MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) - Wearing the image of the late Seve Ballesteros (SEH'-vee by-ehs-TEHR'-ohs) on their sleeves, the team from Europe roared back from a 10-6 deficit to beat the U.S. and win the Ryder Cup, 14 ½ to 13 ½.

The come from behind win matched the performance by the U.S. in 1999 when the Americans came back from the same deficit to win.

European captain Jose Maria Olazabal (oh-lah-THAH'-bul) squeezed his eyes and fought back tears when Martin Kaymer holed a 6-foot par putt to beat Steve Stricker and give Europe the point it needed to keep the cup.

Tiger Woods and Stricker failed to win a match in the three day event in suburban Chicago.

All Europe needed to keep the trophy was a tie. They built momentum by winning the first five singles matches.

It was a shocking finish for the Americans, who were poised to win the Ryder Cup for only the third time since 1999.
