Parker Ray threw a called third strike with the tying run at second base to help the San Luis Obispo Blues beat the Santa Barbara Foresters 5-3 to reclaim first place on Tuesday night in Sinsheimer Stadium.
The Blues improved to 15-8 in California Collegiate League action and 26-12 overall after taking the opener of the key three game series. The Foresters, who are ranked 7th in the nation this week, fell to 14-8 in league and 24-12 overall.
Taylor Anderson led the Blues' 9-hit attack with 3 hits, including a clutch 2-run double in the fifth inning that proved to be the deciding hit. Keegan Dale added 2 hits and scored twice for the Blues.
Three San Luis Obispo pitchers struck out a combined 17 Foresters. Starter Gandy Stubblefield struck out 6 in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed 2 hits and 2 runs, while walking 5 to earn the victory. Chad Girodo threw 3 2/3 innings of perfect relief. The lefty struck out 9 of the 11 batters he faced. Ray struck out the only two hitters he faced to pick up the save.
The Foresters managed just two hits, including a run-scoring single in the fifth by Ryan O'Hearn.
The two Central Coast rivals, who shared the CCL title last season, continue their series on Wednesday at 6pm with the finale on Thursday at 6pm. There are less than two weeks left in the regular season.
