GALT, Calif. (AP) - Sacramento County officials say an animal control officer was fatally shot at a home where he was assisting a bank employee with business related to an eviction.
Sheriff's officials say the unarmed county officer was shot around noon Wednesday in Galt, about 25 miles south of downtown Sacramento.
Sacramento-area police have surrounded the home where the suspected gunman has barricaded himself. The street has been closed off, and a SWAT team has been called to the scene.
Authorities say when the animal control officer and the bank officer knocked on the door, a person inside came out and opened fire with a shotgun.
Officials say the female bank employee was hit by gunfire, but was able to run for help.
