A rush of winter weather has gripped several states.
Freezing winds carried in the coldest weather of the winter overnight in many areas.
In Minneapolis an outdoor ice rink was shut down and a cross country ski event was canceled because of extreme conditions. The cut-off temperature for the race is four below zero.
Where the slopes are open, ski patrols are keeping a close eye on those who just have to make a run.
"They are out there and if they spot somebody that maybe has the first signs of frost bite or something, we'll get them inside and get them warmed up," says Hyland Ski Area's Fred Seymour.
For some, though, inside isn't much better. Thousands of families still recovering from Hurricane Sandy are using whatever they can to stay warm.
Forecasters say some areas will suffer through the longest extended cold streak they've seen in the last two years.
