An overnight shelter will soon be opening at the County Department of Social Services building.

The 5Cities Homeless Coalition is spearheading the project which will provide a warming center for the homeless when temperatures drop below 32 degrees or when there is a 40% chance of rain.

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with the coalition on Tuesday, Feb. 26 to provide the shelter in Arroyo Grande.

Many businesses in the area are not in favor of the shelter because they say it may draw more homeless people to the neighborhood and ward off customers.

The coalition will now work with the Arroyo Grande City Council to approve a conditional user permit for the location at 1086 E. Grand Ave.

Operating the shelter will cost about $500 a night to help pay for staff and food for the people staying in the shelter.
