Arroyo Grande basketball heads to Redondo Beach in search of its third-straight upset as it continues its CIF title run. The Eagles, seeded #11 in Division 2A, play at Redondo Union, the #2 seed, in a semifinal game Tuesday night.
The 22-8 Eagles have already knocked out 6th seeded Redlands East Valley by 19 in the second round and 3rd seeded Canyon in the quarterfinals. Matt Willkomm drained a 14 footer as time expired to deliver a thrilling 53-51 win in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Willkomm finished with 15 points and Andrew Midyett led the way with 16.
Willkomm said the buzz from last Friday's win faded. He vows they are all business this week. "A couple of things I learned from football, you get a good win, but the next day you gotta move on and look forward to the new team so now it's on to Redondo," said Willkomm, who poured in a team-best 19 in the Eagles' second round victory.
Despite finishing fourth in the Pac 7 League, AG is in the semifinals for the second-straight season. This also marks the fourth time in the last seven years they've made the final four.
"Throughout the season we're always trying to get that team chemistry and so right now we're peaking. We're getting our team together. We're playing the best we have all season," said senior forward Brennan Rivera.
The Eagles lost in the title game in 2012.
21-8 Redondo beat Glendora 55-41 in the quarterfinals after outscoring its opponent 17-7 in the first quarter and 16-9 in the third quarter. Derek Biale led the way with 12 points and Chris Henderson added 10. Junior Ian Fox added 9 points. Fox is the team's leading scorer this season averaging 15 points per game. Biale averages 13 points per contest. The Sea Hawks went a perfect 10-0 in the Bay League and twice beat Leuzinger, the same team that eliminated Atascadero in the quarterfinals last week.
The winner advances to the division final that has been set for Saturday at 2pm in the Anaheim Arena.
