After struggling to pass tax measures to fund a new police station in Arroyo Grande, city leaders are thinking outside the box to get the funding they need.

At this point, Arroyo Grande leaders are considering selling vacant property, owned by the city, off Old Ranch Road and West Branch Street.
They hope the sale of those properties will give them the ability to seek out additional money through federal grants and loans.

"The urgency of it is that we have some significant repairs to the current facility that have to be made," said city manager, Steve Adams.

For years, water damage could be found throughout the Arroyo Grande police station, along with over packed supply rooms, even their high tech computer systems are stuck sitting in a closet with nowhere to go.

"We had to come back and get another solution," said Adams.

So city managers got creative, and came up with a plan to get a portion of the 6-million dollars needed for the ailing headquarters by selling three city owned properties

"Our appraisal showed a value of about $640,000 for the initial three parcels," said Adams, "So we're hopeful we'll get at least that."

So at least the empty lots can fill the gap, in their finances

City officials say they hope to have the entire plan ironed out by March.
At that point they will choose whether to build a new police station or upgrade the current one.

The city manager also told me they will form a three person committee consisting of one council member, one planning commissioner, and the community development director to hire a realtor and oversee the sale of the properties.

If everything goes to plan city leaders say they hope to break ground on construction late this year.
