Artis-Payne, Gillaspy named Athletes of the Week by NSBCA Roundtable

Allan Hancock College running back Cameron Artis-Payne and St. Joseph High golfer Desiree Gillaspy were honored by the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable on Monday.

Artis-Payne was named the Male Athlete of the Week. The sophomore running back rushed for 206 yards on 26 carries and scored 3 touchdowns in the Bulldogs' 50-44 win over LA Harbor. The 6th ranked Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall after their victory of the 7th ranked team in Southern California.

Artis-Payne sealed the win with an 83 yard touchdown run.

"They played us different than any other team that's played us. They threw 9 in the box and went 1 on 1 on the outside. So we had to make adjustments as far as when we got on the sideline. You know me and the offensive line and other running backs got together and made adjustments and we created holes after that," said Artis-Payne.

An All-State selection last season as a freshman, Artis-Payne leads the state with 991 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns.

St. Joseph High's Desiree Gillaspy was named Female Athlete of the Week. She shot a one-over par 36 last week in 106 degree heat in a dual win over Atascadero to earn medalist honors. A few days later, she shot a 3-over 73 in the Pac 7 League midseason tournament for the Knights.
