Atascadero and Righetti softball earn dominant victories

MacKenzie Messina drove in five runs and Mckenzi Etchison homered as Atascadero softball crushed Templeton 12-1 in five innings on Tuesday in a non-league game. The Greyhounds improved to 3-0, while the Eagles fell to 1-2.

The Greyhounds collected 13 hits in the victory. They struck for 3 runs in the first inning, 3 more in the second, 2 in the fourth and 4 in the fifth inning.

Messina started the scoring with a two-run single in the first. Jessica Rouse hit a run-scoring double to make it a 3-0 game. Keara Blodget clubbed a two-run single in the second and scored on Etchinson's two-run home run that made it 6-0 Atascadero. Blodget added a run-scoring single in the fourth and Messina hit a 3-run double in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Templeton scored one run in the second inning when Corinne Barto and Kiani Alba hit back-to-back singles. Kacey McTeer, who went in to run for Barto, later scored on a ground ball by Sierra Jones.

Also on Tuesday, Righetti softball crushed Santa Ynez 30-4 in a non-league game. Righetti improved to 5-0 to open the season. The Warriors managed 10 hits, led by 3 from Siera Betts. They also drew 15 walks from Santa Ynez pitches.

Betts, Chrystal Dulay and Brianna Alvarez, all sophomores, each drove in 5 runs. Tiana McWhorter and Dulay collected 2 hits apiece. Stevie Wisz scored 5 times in the game after drawing 3 walks and getting hit by a pitch.

Melanie Johnson earned the win for the Warriors. The junior allowed 7 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned runs and struck out 8 Pirates. Righetti hosts San Marcos on Friday.
