Jared Studeman carried Atascadero in the first half and Robbie Berwick took over in the second as the Greyhounds beat St. Joseph, 69-58 on Monday. The teams entered the game in a tie for second place in the Pac-7 at 7-2. The win propels Atascadero to 8-2, one game back of Righetti. The Warriors beat Pioneer Valley, 82-39 on Monday.
The Atascadero gym was packed for the second match up of the season between the teams. St. Joseph won the meeting in Santa Maria on January 11, 85-74.
Studeman scored 15 points in the first half on five three pointers. The junior hit another three pointer in the second half to give him a career high six. Berwick scored 17 of his 21 in the second half. The junior point guard also had 10 assists.
Atascadero was up 35-27 at the half. St. Joseph guard, Case Bruton hit a three pointer from 25 feet at the end of the half. He scored 15 in the first half and finished with 22. The Knights got within five points in the third quarter but the Greyhounds stretched the lead to 56-41 going into the fourth. Junior post Keith Datu added 18 for the Knights including two dunks.
None of Atascadero's bench players scored in the game. Point guard Joe Johnson scored 12, forward Brady Youngquist had 9 and Connor Kim scored 5.
Both teams have two games left. Atascadero hosts Righetti on Wednesday night and then plays at Pioneer Valley on Friday. If the Greyhounds win both they will be guaranteed at least a share of the Pac-7 title. St. Joseph plays at San Luis Obispo on Wednesday before hosting Paso Robles on Friday.
