The Atascadero Fire Department is getting a $1 million donation.
The money comes from the estate of a longtime supporter of the department, Bertha Shultz. Shultz was an Atascadero resident who passed away in June. Since 1997, she anonymously donated more than $30,000 to the department. The money helped cover the costs of medical equipment, supplies, and training for the paramedic program. The donations also made it possible for the department to buy automatic external defibrillators, or AED's, as well as cover the costs associated with training emergency responders.
"Mrs. Schultz's heartfelt and caring donations to our fire department have most definitely contributed to the health and safety of our community. She never wanted any recognition, no matter how hard we tried, until we named one of our advanced life support fire engines after her. If you see Engine 7592 driving through town, look for the stickers which read 'Big Bertha.' She got a real kick out of that and was very touched and proud to be a permanent fixture on our engine. This incredible donation is unprecedented in our department's history and truly shows how much Mrs. Schultz appreciated and trusted what our department has been able to accomplish with her many donations over the years," said Fire Chief Kurt Stone.
"Mrs. Schultz's selfless contribution to our community's well-being is simply awe inspiring. It's humbling to see the confidence she has placed in our Atascadero Fire Department's staff. I know they will honor her memory with careful decisions when investing this gift, and our community will be safer because of it," said Atascadero Mayor, Tom O'Malley.
A press conference was held Thursday at the Cuesta College's North Campus to announce the donation.
