Atascadero High School has filled its boys basketball coaching vacancy left by Jerry Tamelier's retirement. Matt Knudson was promoted from assistant coach to the head position. Knudson graduated from Atascadero High School in 1997 where he played on the Greyhounds basketball team. Knudson went on to play at Cuesta College and then Sonoma State. In his junior season at Sonoma State he was fourth in the nation in three point percentage at the Division-2 level.
Last season was Knudson's first and only as a Greyhound assistant, the team finished 18-10. Knudson has been coaching the Atascadero players in a summer league and he says the kids were the reason he decided to take the job. "At first I wasn't sure but after working with the kids for the summer and being with them for a few weeks, I was excited about the opportunity. They're a great group of kids I had a great time working with them last year."
Atascadero High School Athletic Director Sam Derose says there were two finalists for the job. Derose says Knudson was hired in part because of his character, "Matt's a great guy" said Derose.
Knudson will take over a team that started four sophomores last season including division one recruit Robbie Berwick. His hire is pending school board approval but that is considered a formality.
Tamelier coached the Greyhounds for the last 29 years, compiling a 349-282 record and 19 CIF playoff appearances.
