If we recognize athletic achievement, we should also recognize academic achievement. That's what President Barack Obama said to a group of 100 science fair winners from around the nation Tuesday, and one of those winners is from Atascadero High School.
Sean Murphy is the team captain of the FIRST Robotics Team 973. He attended the White House Science Fair with his mentor, Larry Price.
The pair demonstrated their championship robot, "Titan" and had a chance to get publicity and recognition for the FIRST program, or "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology."
The trip was paid for through the FIRST program.
"It doesn't belong just on the back pages of a newspaper," said President Obama. "We've got to lift this up, we've got to emphasize how important this is and recognize these incredible young people who are doing things I couldn't imagine thinking about in 5th grade or 8th grade or high school."
The President also used the opportunity to call for $80 million from congress to support science and math education.
