Atascadero house fire damage estimated at $250,000

Fire officials estimate that a house fire in Atascadero Monday night caused $250,000 in damage. Officials say no one was home when the fire broke out just after 8:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Traffic Way. They say it may have been burning for up to 30 minutes before one of the people who live there returned home. Part of the roof collapsed in the kitchen, keeping firefighters from entering the home at first, officials say. The fire burned part of the living room and kitchen, but firefighters say they were able to keep it from spreading to the bedrooms or garage. 21 fire personnel responded to the blaze, which took 20 minutes to get under control. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but fire officials believe it started in the kitchen.
