Atascadero softball erupted for nine runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 24-1 season-opening win over Mission Prep on Tuesday. Kaila Wood and Alese Dominguez combined on a no-hitter with 8 strikeouts in the game that was called after five innings.
The reigning Pac-7 League champions improved to 1-0.
Junior second baseman Keara Blodget went 2 for 2 at the plate with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Her replacement, Ali Sykes, went 1 for 1 with 3 RBI. Blodget and Sykes were two of five Greyhounds to drive in 3 or more runs. McKenzie Etchison and MacKenzie Messina drove in 3 with one hit apiece. Jessie Featherstone drove in four runs, three of which came on a bases loaded double to clear the bags in the third. Atascadero scored 8 runs in the third, four more in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Nikki Mack walked in all six of her plate appearances. She scored 5 runs. Blodget and Messina scored 3 times each.
The Royals scored an unearned run in the first when Kiana Harris rolled a ground ball to third and the throw to first was offline allowing Taylor Pilg to come around to the plate.
Wood went the first 2 2/3 innings with 6 strikeouts for Atascadero, while Dominguez went the final 2 1/3 to complete the no-no.
Atascadero tallied 12 hits in the game.
