Atascadero State Hospital faces thousands of dollars in fines

Atascadero State Hospital has been hit with $27,000 in fines from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.
The citations are for dangerous conditions and patient assaults on employees.
According to CalOSHA, from January through September of this year, the hospital averaged 10 patient-on-employee injuries per month.
ASH officials issued the following statement:
"The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) continues to make staff and patient safety a high priority throughout the State Hospital system. We understand CalOSHA's concerns regarding employee safety, and DSH and CalOSHA have been collaborating through ongoing meetings and workgroups to resolve these issues. Currently, Cal OSHA is working with DSH toward the goal of developing and implementing plans for safety upgrades for staff working with patients at the state's five mental health facilities. This process continues to require extensive commitment and collaboration from Cal OSHA, our management, and the unions representing our employees. DSH remains committed to providing our State Hospital Staff with a safe workplace."
ASH does have the opportunity to appeal the citations.
